249 Huskers Honored by Big 12

A total 249 Nebraska student-athletes were honored by the conference as members of the Big 12 Commissioner's Spring Honor Roll, the NU Athletic Department announced on Thursday.
Among the 249 Huskers who posted grade-point averages of 3.0 or better during the 2006 spring semester, 38 NU student-athletes produced perfect 4.0 GPA semesters.
Headlining the list of Big 12 Commissioner's Spring Honor Roll members for the Huskers were Kurt Mann and Dane Todd from Coach Bill Callahan's football team. Mann and Todd, who were both named first-team CoSIDA Academic All-Americans during the fall, each posted perfect 4.0 GPA's during the spring semester.
Freshman All-America place-kicker Jordan Congdon also posted a 4.0 GPA during the spring, along with junior Brandon Rigoni and freshmen Wes Cammack and Tyler Wortman to give the football team six players with 4.0 GPA's among the 38 players who earned spots on the honor roll.
Two other CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, Christina Houghtelling and Sarah Pavan from Coach John Cook's volleyball team, also posted perfect 4.0 GPA's during the spring semester.
Houghtelling, the 2005 American Volleyball Coaches Association National Player of the Year, and Pavan, a first-team All-American and the 2005 Big 12 Player of the Year, were two of five NU volleyball players to post 4.0 GPA's during the spring, including Tracy Stalls, Maggie Griffin and Amanda Gates. Overall, 12 members of the volleyball team earned mention on the honor roll.
Nebraska softball CoSIDA Academic All-Americans KoKo Tacha and Lizzy Aumua led Coach Rhonda Revelle's contingent of nine players on the spring honor roll, which included freshman pitcher Molly Hill, who posted a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Coach Mike Anderson's Nebraska baseball team added 17 student-athletes to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll, including graduate student Dusty Timm who produced a 4.0 GPA.
Coach John Walker's Nebraska soccer team also enjoyed a stellar spring semester in the classroom, producing 17 members of the honor roll, including four players (Brooke Bredenberg, Jessie Goodell, Sari Raber and Brittany Pfeil) with 4.0 GPA's.
The Nebraska men's and women's track and field and cross country programs led by Gary Pepin and Jay Dirksen, boasted 65 members of the spring honor roll, including 15 male and female student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPA's.
The Nebraska swimming and diving team led by Coach Pablo Morales contributed a strong contingent of 18 student-athletes to the honor roll, while the Husker wrestling team, under the direction of Coach Mark Manning, added 15 student-athletes.
Seven members of Coach Robin Krapfl's women's golf team, which qualified for their third-ever NCAA Championships May 23-26, earned spots on the Big 12 Spring Commissioner's Honor Roll, as did seven members of Coach Bill Spangler's men's golf squad which earned an NCAA Regional berth. Coach Kerry McDermott's men's tennis also produced seven graduates during the spring semester.
Coach Launi Meili's rifle team, which posted its best-ever finish in school history as the NCAA runner-up, also performed well in the classroom during the spring semester with seven student-athletes earning spots on the honor roll.
Six members of Coach Scott Jacobson's NCAA Tournament-qualifying women's tennis team earned spots on the honor roll, including sophomore Imke Reimers with a 4.0 GPA. Six members of Coach Dan Kendig's women's gymnastics squad, which advanced to its seventh NCAA Super Six Finals in the past nine year, were also named to the spring honor roll.
During the fall and spring semesters combined, Nebraska had 479 student-athletes recognized by the Big 12 for producing grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher during the semester, including 72 perfect 4.0 GPA's.
